Ice Flies Off of Car and Damages Another Car

A vehicle’s window and roof were damaged when ice flew off of another traveling vehicle and hit the car on Friday, February 13, 2015. The vehicles were traveling on Interstate 91 in New Haven. There do not appear to be any injuries, but the vehicle damage is somewhat extensive.At this time, police have not found the vehicle that caused the damage.

In Connecticut, drivers are required to completely remove snow and ice from the vehicle prior to driving it. Drivers who fail to do so can be fined. Where that does not happen and the snow or ice causes damage, then driver can face additional fines. The fines are even higher for commercial vehicles.

In addition to fines, drivers could also face a personal injury lawsuit for any damage or injuries that they cause. Liability in a vehicle extends to more than just car crashes. It also includes any cause of any type of damage—even if that damage is actually “caused” by the snow and ice. The accident would not have occurred if the driver had cleared his or her car properly, so the driver would still be liable.
